I met Susan in 1974, when I was 12. I still clearly remember it. She was so vibrant and glowing. I thought she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen — movie star beautiful. And she had an inner light and warmth that absolutely filled the room. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her. I was in awe.

Almost 45 years later, there are too many memories to share. I wouldn’t know where to begin. Times filled with laughter and joy and fun. Times filled with sadness and pain and tears. But always, always filled with love.

Just a few weeks before Susan left us, she and I were making plans to get together for a Scrabble session. Sadly, this was never able to happen. But I receive some comfort, even in my profound sadness and feelings of loss, by reading and re-reading the last words we texted to each other.

Susan to me: Love you Laurie.

Me to Susan: I love you so very much.
